Factory built Ruger full auto AC556. This machinegun has been well cared for and shows minimal signs of use. The barrel is bright and maintains strong rifling.

The Ruger AC-556 is a selective-fire version of the popular Mini-14 rifle, originally developed for military and law enforcement use. It is a fully automatic machine gun regulated by the National Firearms Act (NFA). Due to its NFA classification, the AC-556 is not legally available for private sale unless it was legally registered before the 1986 machine gun ban.

Features and variations
  • Selective-fire capability: Unlike the semi-automatic Mini-14, the
AC-556 includes a selector switch on the right/rear of the receiver to switch between semi-automatic, three-round burst, and full-automatic fire.
  • Barrel and stock: The AC-556 was produced in a standard 18.5-inch barrel configuration with a wood stock, as well as shorter versions with a 13-inch barrel and side-folding stock (designated AC-556F or AC-556K). Some stainless steel versions were also produced.
  • Attachments: The rifle has a winged front sight with a bayonet lug and a flash suppressor that could be used for launching approved rifle grenades.
  • Different receiver: The AC-556 has a slightly longer receiver than the standard Mini-14 to accommodate the different fire control group for its select-fire mechanism.
  • Magazines: The rifle uses 20- and 30-round detachable box magazines.
History and legal status
  • Production run: Ruger produced the AC-556 from 1979 to 1999. The company stopped offering factory service and parts for the firearm in 2009.
  • Intended market: The AC-556 was created to compete with the M16 for government contracts, particularly with smaller police departments that wanted a 5.56mm machine gun but preferred a less “military” or “assault rifle” appearance. It was also used by some international militaries and police forces.
  • Civilian ownership: Civilian ownership of the AC-556 is restricted to those legally registered and transferable before the 1986 machine gun ban.
